Postgraduate Certificate (Colposcopy)
This inter-professional Programme is suitable for both nurses and doctors,and is designed to meet the BSCCP/RCOG requirements of colposcopy training in both diagnostic & therapeutic colposcopy.
The Postgraduate Certificate programme comprises of two modules that are credit rated. Each taught module offers 30 credits.
Students will study two of the following modules:
- Foundations in Colposcopy (NRT116)
- Advances in Colposcopy (NRT115)
On successful completion of two masters level modules of 30 credits each it is possible for the 60 credits to be used towards the MSc in Advanced Practice programme. Please note: this must take place within 3 years.
Admissions Policy
Applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate in Colposcopy who enter the programme as a trainee must meet the following BSCCP (2009) criteria for eligibility to undertake colposcopy training.
New Trainees
Doctors must have a recognised medical qualification.
Nurses must have;
RGN 1st level registration.
- 2 years experience in women’s health.
- is competent in smear taking and can provide evidence of undertaking a recognised education/training programme.
- Knowledge of the colposcopy service and the needs of the patient.
All trainees must;
- Have the need to develop, knowledge, skills and competence in colposcopy as part of their clinical practice and provide evidence of support from the sponsoring organisation such as lead consultant in colposcopy and/or line manager of the NHS Trust.
- Become a trainee member of the BSCCP (see appendix 2 for membership pack) and comply with their requirements for membership and sustain membership throughout the programme. BSCCP membership incurs a cost which will be agreed to be met outside the module fee by either the student or the sponsoring organisation.
- Identify a clinical mentor- a named BSCCP approved trainer who has agreed to supervise and act as a trainer throughout the programme of study.
- Agree to or have agreement that the sponsoring organisation will meet the costs of the BSCCP OSCE examination which is in excess of the module fee.
BSCCP Accredited Colposcopist
Applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate in Colposcopy who enter the programme as an accredited colposcopist have to meet the following criteria and must have;
- Membership of the BSCCP and be currently practising colposcopy with proof of BSCCP certification or re-certification within the last 3 years.
- Evidence of support from the sponsoring organisation such as lead consultant in colposcopy and/or line manager.
- Identify a clinical mentor- a named BSCCP recognised trainer if they wish to be trained in therapeutic/treatment colposcopy who has agreed to supervise and act as a trainer.
Additionally all applicants for the Postgraduate Certificate in Colposcopy must;
- Provide evidence of their ability to study at a minimum of level 3. Those unable to provide accredited evidence may use the APEL route to verify their ability to study at level 3.
- Possess an initial or higher degree of an institution approved by Senate for this purpose; OR possess a non-graduate qualification approved by Senate as equivalent to graduation; OR demonstrate that, for a minimum of two years, a responsible position has been held that provides relevant experience as per Cardiff University (2009/2010) regulations.
