MSc in Advanced Practice (MSc)


The programme is flexible, student-centred and open to all health professionals including nurses, midwives, doctors, social workers and physiotherapist to advance their knowledge, skills and competence in relation to their practice role.

The programme offers a generic and five specialist pathways providing students with the opportunity to explore their specialist areas of practice.

 All  Modules offered in the programme may also be studied on an individual basis.

Programme Structure

The MSc comprises a compulsory research module and three modules at master's level, plus a dissertation (180 credits).  You may choose to exit the programme at an earlier stage - a stand alone module (30 credits), PG Cert (60 credits) or a PG Dip (120 credits).

The MSc Advanced Practice offers flexible study for students with busy clinical careers.

Part time route - Two years with the taught programme, over one academic year (three terms) and one term of year 2 (the due date for submission of dissertation by part time students shall normally be no more than three years from the point of registration, onto the programme).

Full time route - Taught programme over three terms and completion of a dissertation (the due date for submission of dissertation by full time students shall normally be no more than 50 weeks from the date of initial registration, onto the programme).

The programme offers flexible learning via a range of delivery styles including classroom teaching, self-directed study, distance learning, e-learning.

Programme Applications

We welcome and encourage early applications.  Our preferred date for receipt of completed Application Forms is at least three months prior to commencement of the programme.  

The optimal date for application for 2012-2013 for MSc in Advanced Practice is Friday 20 July 2012.

Please note: Essential information required by the University that must be uploaded/forwarded to Registry at point of application:

  • Completed application form.
  • Two references - these must be included with the application form.
  • Supporting papers: Photocopies of the applicant's degree certificate OR photocopies of the applicant's transcript of studies, translated, where necessary, into English.
  • Professional certificates.

Programme Commencement

  • Spring term: week commencing  9 January 2012 
  • Summer term: week commencing 16 April 2012
  • Autumn term: week commencing 24 September 2012

Applicants would be welcome to commence the programme at any time during the year.

Location of the Programme

The delivery of module will take place at Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies sites in Cardiff (Ty Dewi Sant and EastGate House) and throughout SE Wales.

Course Fees

Cardiff School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies is able to offer a 40th Anniversary Postgraduate Scholarship (for reduction in programme fees) of £500 to all new Cardiff University UK/EU students studying this taught programme full-time in September 2011- September 2012.  For new Cardiff University Undergraduate UK/EU students studying this taught programme part-time a pro-rata scholarship of £85 per 30 credit module is available in 2011/12 for one year only
