The paediatric Intensive Care Unit provides holistic care for critically Ill children from across South Wales.  The unit is the lead centre for children in Wales who require Intensive Care.  The unit cares for children and young people up to the age of 18 years.  There is a clear nursing and medical structure on the unit and evidence of good and close working arrangements across the region.  The unit also operates a dedicated twenty four hour retrieval service.



Children and Young People requiring Paediatric critical care aged 0 – 18 years.

Airway management

Fluid management

Assessment skills

Management of CYP requiring Intensive Care e.g. Sepis, Head Injuries, respiratory conditions.


Preparation For Practice:

Revisit lectures in modules NR2114 / 5 around specific specialities e.g. Congenital Heart Disease

Revisit sessions around PICU in module NR3191

Revisit specific clinical skills sessions e.g. Airway management and associated reading.



12.5 hour shifts rotating between days and nights.

07:30 - 20:00

19:30 - 08:00
