GP admissions unit for patients with new or ongoing medical problems



Key Learning Opportunities: 

The Assessment Unit primarily operates as an area of assessment whereby patients are referred by GP’s and out of hours doctors to the medical or surgical teams.  They in turn decide whether the patient will be admitted or discharged possibly with certain follow up tests or clinic appointments.  The unit also accommodates medical or surgical patients from clinics or those referred from the Emergency Unit, where if initial treatment is required it is commenced prior to them being admitted to a ward.

The unit consists of a number of areas including a high care area with three monitor trolleys, a six trolley clinical decisions unit, 18 other trolleys and a lounge area which has sitting patients.  The nurse patient ration is 1:6 in the trolley areas, 1:3 in the high care area and the lounge is staffed by 2-3 nurses.  There are a number of HCSW who are allocated to each area to assist nursing staff.
