D4 East provides care for patients with acute and chronic endocrine conditions. 30 bedded ward consisting of 4 x 6 bedded bays and 6 single cubicles.


All ages of adult patients.

Key Learning Opportunities: 

Students will be able to experience care of patients with acute endocrine problems such as hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia, diabetic keto-acidosis, Cushings Syndrome, Addisons Disease, Chronic foot ulcers, surgical care following diabetic foot surgery, sliding scale insulin and monitoring of ketones and blood sugar levels. Health promotion activities including dietary, smoking and alcohol, foot care and insulin administration specifically in relation to diabetes. Holistic care, discharge planning, falls management, and if applicable ward management.

Preparation For Practice

An understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system and common endocrine problems would be beneficial.
