Acute assessment

0-16 years

Key Learning Opportunities:

The Children’s Assessment Unit is a busy unit that is currently open 24/7 for a trial period.

We see a range of acutely unwell children between the ages of 0-15 (some 16+if already c/o paeds). The majority of patients are medically unwell, however we do assess and treat other specialities including surgical, orthopaedics, ENT, gynaecology- as joint care if the child is <5yrs old.

Our service providers/ users are mainly GP services and ED. However we also take referrals from midwives, specialist nurses and direct (patients with chronic illnesses).

Our role in CAU is to initially assess the patient on arrival and then assist/ provide treatment and care as required.

We work closely with the multidisciplinary team. We attend resus calls and all nursing staff can perform venepuncture and cannulation.
