Steve Young, programme manager of the School of Healthcare Studies’ Post-graduate Certificate in Medical Illustration has received one of the Institute of Medical Illustrators major awards. The Peter Hansell Medal, created in memory of the first editor of the Institute journals, is awarded by the International Editorial Board of the Journal of Visual Communications in Medicine for an outstanding paper published in the previous year. Only ten medals have been cast and, despite being created in 2006, Steve is the first recipient of this exclusive award.

The paper for which the award was directly given, Digital Infrared and Ultraviolet Imaging, Part 1: Infrared, was co-authored with Chris Tetley, one of the Media Resources Centre’s clinical photographers. However, the journal editor, Kathy McFall (one of Steve’s former students and now Head of Medical Illustration in Glasgow) was keen to point out that the award was also in recognition of Steve’s contribution to the journal over the past 30 years. During this time Steve has authored or co-authored 20 papers in this peer reviewed journal and, despite planning to retire in December 2008, has a further 9 papers in various stages of production.

In a touching presentation, the award was given by Kathy and Institute chairman, Angus Robertson at the annual conference dinner in Durham. Present in the audience were 20 of Steve’s former students, including heads of department from Cardiff, Swansea, Glasgow, Manchester, London, Essex and Northampton.
