First for physio in student body
23 March 2009
Keith Finn has become the first physiotherapy undergraduate to chair the Welsh Healthcare Student Forum of the Welsh Assembly government.
The forum for all students on professional health courses meets four times a year to discuss matters affecting undergraduates and the future of the NHS in Wales. It was established four years ago with the help of Philippa Ford, CSP policy officer for Wales, and the Royal College of Nursing.
Mr Finn, a second year physiotherapy student at Cardiff University, is the third chair, following students in psychology and medicine. He said: ‘The whole interprofessional experience is high on my personal agenda and the forum’s closeness to government makes it a unique committee, which I think has yet to tap into its full potential.’
As well as using his ‘physiotherapy motivational’ skills to rally members to keep up the momentum of their discussions between meetings, Mr Finn is looking forward to meeting senior health figures to communicate student opinion.
His first high-level opportunity came last week as one of three forum representatives to meet the health and social services minister for Wales Edwina Hart. ‘It’s a once in a student lifetime opportunity. We want to persuade her we are an entry point for student opinion,’ he said.
