Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Overview:

This three-day course is being run by the Postgraduate and Continuing Education Unit, School of Healthcare Studies, Cardiff University. The course is suitable for all medical / healthcare professionals who use counselling skills as part of their role, mental health professionals from any discipline who want a basic introduction to CBT skills; it is particularly suitable for Nursing /Midwifery profession.

Over the 3 days, (Part 1- Introduction, Part 2 Intermediate, & Part 3 Applying skills), you will be introduced to CBT and there will be an opportunity to gain an understanding of the theory of CBT, the main aim is to teach the application of theory in context. Participants will be encouraged to practice skills and strategies within the workshop. It is assumed you will have an understanding and some experience of the application of counselling skills and it would be expected that participants have undertaken some previous counselling skills training.

Janet is a British Association of Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapies (BABCP) Accredited Psychotherapist and Counsellor (MBACP)

Learning Outcomes:

  • You  will be able to apply basic CBT strategies when working with clients, develop and refine the basic skills in order to integrate them in the context of working with some problems commonly encountered in clinical practice
  • Introduce you to the principles and theory of CBT and how these can be applied in context.
  • Introduce you to basic CBT strategies including agenda setting, testing negative thoughts, using guided discovery, goal setting, the value of homework, and behavioural experiments.
  • Introduce you to the evidence based CBT treatment protocols developed in relation to Depression, Anxiety, and Panic.
  • You will be able to understand how problems develop and produce CBT formulations of clients’ problems.
  • You will be able to understand the role played by thoughts in the maintenance of problems.
  • You will be able to demonstrate ability to apply basic CBT strategies appropriately in order to help alleviate unhelpful symptoms and bring about change.
  • You will be able to understand when and how to employ appropriate helping interventions in order to work with depression and anxiety

Additional information:

The course has been designed to build skills and knowledge over the three days and participants would be encouraged to attend all three days in order to gain the most from the programme. However, participants with some prior knowledge of CBT would benefit from day 2 and or day 3 alone if necessary.
