MSc/Diploma in Social Science Research Methods (SSRM)

Cardiff University Postgraduate Students

Welcome to the new MSc Social Science Research Methods mini-site

Programme Director: Dr Amanda Robinson

Length of course: Full-time: 12 months / Part-time: 27 months

The MSc/Diploma in Social Science Research Methods is managed by the SSRM Office. The SSRM was established to provide an improved level of support to social science graduate students, above and beyond that already provided by individual academic schools. It aims to enhance the academic experience of postgraduate research students by providing a substantial programme of seminars and workshops. It also facilitates dialogue between researchers in social science disciplines in order to encourage interdisciplinary research collaboration.

For many students, the MSc/Diploma in Social Science Research Methods provides the first stage in a doctoral research programme.  The programme is designed to meet the requirements of the ESRC’s Training Guidelines and provides a foundation for embarking on a doctoral research programme and for the further training necessary to become a professional social scientist.  For other students, the MSc/Diploma programme provides a preparation for direct entry into a career in applied social research.

Cardiff University Main Building

Students from a number of academic Schools follow the programme, Cardiff Business School (CARBS), Cardiff Law School (CLAWS), Cardiff School of City and Regional Planning (CPLAN), Cardiff School of European Studies (EUROS), Cardiff School of Psychology (PSYCH), Cardiff School of Social Science (SOCSI). It offers an excellent environment in which to exchange ideas and experiences across conventional disciplinary boundaries within the social sciences.  Those students who progress onto a PhD have access to a range of additional skills training opportunities which are offered via the University’s Research Students Skills Development Programme.

Whatever your intended career trajectory, we hope that you will find the MSc/Diploma programme interesting, challenging and rewarding.
