How do children learn about Islam in the family?
Do you have children aged 12 or under? Would you like to take part in a research project about religion in Muslim families in Cardiff?
We are a team of researchers working at Cardiff University, and some of us are Muslims. We are interested in how parents and other family members teach young children about Islam and are doing some research on this. We already know from research that Muslims are more successful than other religious groups at passing on their religion to their children and we would like to find out why this is from your point of view, by speaking to some families. We would like to interview parents, children and other family members (e.g. grandparents). In a few families we would also like children – with parents’ permission - to keep diaries (using tape recorders) and take photographs of important events and places for learning Islam. This will help us understand how children themselves understand their religious upbringing.
If you take part in the research, you won’t be identified in any way. Interviews will be tape recorded, but we won’t use any real names when we type them up. We will use false names for all people and places. We will say you live in Cardiff but won’t name the street you live in. Any photographs children take will be used mainly for discussion with the children. We won’t put any pictures of people in anything we publish about the research. We will keep all information very securely. Once the research is finished, we will write a book about it. The typed up versions of the interviews and diaries (but NOT photographs) will be kept secure in a ‘data archive’ where other researchers might ask to look at them in future, but no-one will be able to identify your family from this material. If you’d prefer not to be interviewed in English, we speak Arabic, Urdu and Punjabi. For other languages we could use interpreters.
