Review of the Welsh Network of Healthy Schools Schemes

Introduction

The Welsh Network of Healthy School Schemes (WNHSS) encourages the development of local healthy school schemes within a national framework. These local schemes encourage the development of health promoting schools in their area. WNHSS was developed after work with 12 schools in Wales as part of the European Network of Health Promoting Schools. An essential characteristic of the WNHSS is the freedom it allows for local health and education partners in each scheme to devise their own strategies for achieving change and for schools to set their own priorities and agendas in ways which leave individual staff and pupils free to decide how they will initiate and respond to changes in the school environment.

Aims of Project

The Welsh Assembly Government have commissioned CISHE to gather evidence of progress and achievements of the twenty-two Healthy Schools schemes established in all local authorities in Wales. Emerging findings will be reviewed by a panel of experts in school-based health promotion and by key stakeholders who will be invited to attend three regional meetings. A report to the commissioners is expected to provide overarching observations, conclusions and recommendations for future development and support of the Network.
