Chinese Factory

My previous work, particularly in Turkey raised questions about how different cohorts of workers experience industrialisation and factory work.  In the Turkish case, it was suggested that young workers were, if anything, rather more critical.  This research, conducted with Wei Zhao, Labour Studies Centre, Beijing Normal University, China, is an attempt to investigate such dynamics using a case study of a specific factory in China.

Aims of Project

This project is based on interviews with 500 workers, mostly from one SOE in the auto manufacturing sector, in Wuhan, China.  It aims to systematically investigate differences between different cohorts of workers, utilising both qualitative data and data of a quantitative kind which partly replicates items used in previous research in other studies of East Asian countries and Brazil as well as Turkey. Additionally, it makes use of items employed in WERS 2004.
