Research Groups

A number of Research Groups are active within the School of Social Sciences, including:

Childhood Research Group

This group has been functioning as a research cluster since Sept 2003. It began as a reading group focusing on issues of children and intimacy, with 21 members and since then has developed to include wider activities and interests.


Crime & Justice Research Group (CJRG)

The Crime and Justice Research Group builds upon the traditional strengths of criminological research at Cardiff, combining a strong focus upon policy-relevant research with a significant contribution to key theoretical debates within criminology and social science in general.


Culture, Imagination & Practice Research Group (CIP)

Culture, Imagination & Practice (CIP) is a transdisciplinary research group that brings together the study of disciplines, institutions and everyday lives. Engaging with social science, social philosophy, cultural studies, psychosocial research, science and technology studies and feminist theory, CIP addresses the social and cultural resonance of new political formations, subjectivities and social movements.


Education, Culture & Society

The ECS Research Group seminar programme aims to establish an agenda for developing a coherent research strategy and set of research objectives, and to bring researchers together, from across SOCSI, who share an interest in these three research themes.


Ethnography, Culture and Interpretive Analysis

This research group provides a hub for staff and graduate students of the School whose research interests - empirical, methodological and theoretical - are correspondent with ethnographic and/or qualitative methods, and interpretive analysis.


Global Political Economy (GPE)

The Global Political Economy (GPE) Research Group focuses on the broad areas of work and employment, education and learning, state and labour, regionalism and globalisation.


Health & Society

This research group provides a hub for SOCSI staff and graduate students whose research interests - empirical, methodological and theoretical - are correspondent with ethnographic and/or qualitative methods, and interpretive analysis.


Risk, Interaction and Organisation (RIO)

Information about the Risk, Interaction and Organisation research group, which draws upon a number of areas of substantive research within the School including medicine and health, environmental issues, social work and social administration, criminology, health & safety, transport safety, technology management, and education.


Sexualities & Gender

Information about the Sexualities & Gender research group at Cardiff University School of Social Sciences, which brings together people interested and involved in research on sexuality and/or gender, primarily in the Cardiff University School of Social Sciences but including, also, interested people from other schools and departments.


SOCSI Social Theory Forum

Information about the SOCSI Social Theory Forum, which is committed to Symposia, debate, critique and dialogue; Exploration and investigation of established and emergent traditions of social theorising; The promotion of social theory across social sciences and beyond; and Theoretically engaged empirical research.


Work, Employability and Labour Markets (WELM)

Work, Employability and Labour Markets (WELM) is a research group involved in leading-edge studies on globalisation, corporate strategy and the future of skills; graduate employability, recruitment and the labour market; workforce development and comparative skill formation; workplace learning; creativity, innovation and enterprise; and the future of work and careers.
