Name: Darren M Andrews
Position: ESRC-funded PhD Student

Current Research Project/s: 

Meeting the duty: An explorative case study of a sample of local authorities in Wales and their models for promoting the educational experiences and attainment of young people with looked after status.

Previous research has shown that when compared to the majority of their peers, young people with looked after status typically ‘underachieve’ within the education system. The Welsh Government has a commitment to raise the educational attainment of young people with looked after status and since devolution has developed its own education policies and guidance for local authorities. Thus, the implications for local authorities and their statutory duties are far reaching in terms of the development and implementation of appropriate policies. An initial online request for information from the twenty-two local authorities in Wales undertaken by the researcher during December 2012 – March 2013, discovered different interpretations to the legalisation and policies of the Welsh government resulting in different models of supporting and promoting the educational experiences and attainment of young people with looked after status. For example, the models range from having no team to teams of one to seven people. In addition, the models contain different occupational memberships whose assigned role is to promote and support the education of looked after children and young people. This thesis therefore seeks to explore this varied landscape through a qualitative case study of a sample of local authorities in Wales and their different models of supporting and promoting the educational experiences and attainment of young people with looked after status. The empirical focus of the thesis is to: explore and contrast the different models within the local authorities; the relationship between young people with looked after status and their assigned professionals; and to understand how policy and legalisation is articulated from the perspectives of the assigned professionals and young people with looked after status.

Current Research Project:

Young people and sexual learning in an era of ‘sexualisation’ (funded by the ESRC). The aim of this project is to use mixed methods to research how young people develop understandings of sex and sexuality, particularly in relation to how these understandings can operate to regulate and reinforce, as well as subvert and challenge gender norms. The study will include qualitative semi-structured and narrative interviews, memory books, visual collages, and a quantitative survey. Combined the qualitative and quantitative data will provide an important and powerful database that may be used to assess the influence as well as aid the development of sexuality education policy and practice.

Current Research Project/s:
Is Anyone listening? The impact of children's participation on public decision-making. The subject of my thesis is the participation of children in the design, delivery and evaluation of public services. The research examines the influence of a range of children's deliberative forums have over public services, exploring both the policy outcomes and the processes involved. Participation is located within a wider theoretical framework of governance perspectives which recognise and support partnerships and networks that can encourage greater civic participation. The research employs a case study, longitudinal research design and aims to contribute to an assessment of the extent to which new governance spaces in Wales are constructing children as a legitimate group in the policy making process.

Current Research Project:
'Secure Transition? The planning and management of exit strategies for young people leaving secure accommodation.'

My PhD has the principal aim of revealing how ‘resettlement’ is approached from the perspectives and experiences of young people leaving the secure estate, and their key workers. The objective is to gain a greater insight through an exploration of young people’s experiences and perceptions, and the extent to which they perceive the mechanisms of resettlement as enhancing or impeding a positive transition back into the community. The research is particularly interested in multiagency approaches to ‘joined-up’ resettlement, and the ways that various models of coordination are instigated by relevant statutory and voluntary agencies prior to release.

Current Research Project/s: 
Gender, conflict and power in young children’s relationship cultures. Pilot project exploring the regulation of gender norms in young children’s (age 5-6) school-based peer relationship cultures, on which I am working with Emma Renold. This is affiliated to a larger European-funded project called ALLIES, which aims to develop caring, community-based measures to prevent school violence in the early years (website: I am carrying out ethnographic research in a primary school, seeking to understand the local gendered peer cultures which shape children’s negotiations of their friendships and social worlds. A parallel project is being carried out in Finland, led by Tuija Huuki at the University of Oulu.

Love hurts? Gendered power, control and regulation in middle-class teenagers’ relationship cultures. My PhD project investigates 14-16 year old teenagers’ negotiations of their gendered and (middle) classed identities, in the context of their heterosexualised relationship cultures. It draws on a mixed-method research project (including questionnaire, interview and observation data), carried out in a large high-performing 11-18 comprehensive state school in an affluent, ethnically homogenous area of the south-east of England. The project explores the ways that relations of power, control and abuse are played out. I explore young people’s negotiation and construction of regulatory frameworks of heterosexuality, influenced by their peer cultures, relations with and perceptions from adults (including school), and the broader socio-cultural context. My research also explores teenagers’ positioning as privileged middle-class young people in a society which often denies the continuing relevance of class in shaping subjectivities and opportunities, and the relation of class to young sexualities.

Dental Health of looked after children: In partnership with Northumbria Health Board, this project is a process evaluation of a pilot community dental service for looked after children and care leavers. We are also conducting an audit of arrangements of dental care for looked after children in local authorities across England and Wales. Dental health is vital for self esteem as well as physical health and some children coming into care may have poor dental health and poor prior experiences of dental care.

Name: Aleksandra Kaczmarek-Day (Profile)

Expertise: I am interested in family migration, transnational childhoods and migrant children’s identities.

Current Research Project/s: 
’Polish migrant children’s negotiations of their identity and belonging in Wales’. I am currently working on my PhD (ESCR funded) project with Polish post–accession migrant children living in an urban area of South Wales. I am interested in how these middle-childhood children (aged 8-12) experience migration, what their identity choices are and how and with whom they make friends. This ethnographic project uses participatory methodology and is carried out in a variety of social settings: a Catholic primary-school and Polish Saturday-school, two Catholic churches and community gatherings.

The DECIDE study: is a multi-centre trial that has been designed to investigate, from diagnosis, the effect of starting type 1 diabetes management at home or in hospital by assessing and comparing blood glucose control and well being of children aged 0-17 years with type 1 diabetes. Eight centres have been recruiting patients to the study. The final number recruited to the trial is 203. The original recruitment target was 240 but because fewer people have withdrawn than anticipated, and the data collection is good, the TSC gave their permission to reduce the recruitment target to 200. The trial closed to recruitment on 31 October 2011.

The EPIC study: This 4-stage study aims to develop and evaluate an individually-tailored, age-appropriate information resource to support decision-making and self-care relating to insulin management and electronic blood glucose monitoring for children aged 6-18 years with type 1 diabetes, compared to available resources (if any) in clinical practice.

Dawn Mannay is a Lecturer in Social Science (Psychology) at Cardiff University and also held the posts of Associate Lecturer at the Open University and Visiting Lecturer at the University of Newport; as well as being involved with the Women Making a Difference Program. Expertise: Family Centred Care in disabled children’s services- Interviews and Focus Groups with health and social care staff and parents of disabled children. Pedal Power- looking at the effects of adapted cycling for children with cerebral palsy by interviewing children with Cerebral Palsy.

Current Research Project/s: 
Pedal Power - Does participation in adapted dynamic cycling affect lower limb muscle function, activity levels, and quality of life of children with Cerebral Palsy? 2009-2012. Physiotherapists working with children and young people with Cerebral Palsy (CP) are aware of the impact of this disability on their participation in society. Fowler et al suggest that a lack of methods to measure important aspects of children with CP’s participation has limited our understanding of this area. Objective: To explore the views and experiences of children with CP and their families regarding their participation in adapted dynamic cycling (ADC).

What value does the MPOC-SP have for physiotherapists working with children? 2006-2009. Abstract: Family-centred care has been defined as a philosophy of care where families are supported in their decision-making roles in an equal partnership with professionals. The research question was ‘How ‘‘family centred’’ do staff and parents perceive their work with disabled children and young people?’ A questionnaire, the Measure of Processes of Care for Service Providers (MPOC-SP), was used as a basis for designing focus groups and interview questions. Staff and parents took part in these and data were analysed using an editing approach. Staff described how they adapted their service to meet parental needs and empowered and enabled parents despite receiving no specific training in FCC. Parents spoke highly of the staff input and gave varied descriptions of the attributes they most valued, including feeling supported and being in an equal partnership. Investigation of the influence of focused FCC training on parental experiences is warranted.

Current Research Project/s: 
Current research in early intervention and prevention in family support services, with emphasis upon the way childhood and children’s needs are constructed by professionals and the implications of this for child and adult participation in service planning. Organisational practices and policies are also examined to examine discursive, applied and ideological aspects that position families and children as in need. What counts as successful interventions are critically examined in light of current debates about ‘problem’ families and building parenting competences.
