The Rescaling of Space Workshop

Starts: 13 May 2008

The Rescaling of Space Workshop

Postgraduate Global Political Economy Research Group

Concepts of space and spatiality have been applied in different disciplines for considerable time in different guises. One of the questions is how space can be used across disciplinary boundaries. The aim of the event is to debate how we as researchers can use perspectives on space in understanding the changing relations between the state, civil society and the market.
Specifically we want to:

  • explore links between current debates in sociology, geography, economics, planning, criminology and politics.
  • address the question of where space ‘fits’ in contemporary capitalism.
  • bring together scholars and postgraduate researchers from different disciplines

The day includes two workshop sessions and a panel discussion. The core themes of the workshops are ‘globalisation’ and ‘time/ space and community’. The workshop sessions are based on the guest speakers’ presentations followed by round table discussions to generate active and critical debate.

Guest speakers include:

  • Dr Angus Cameron, University of Leicester
  • Professor Martin Jones, University of Aberystwyth
  • Professor Al Rainnie, University of Leicester
  • Professor Valerie Walkerdine, Cardiff University

11.15 - 17.00, Tuesday 13th May 2008, Glamorgan Building

The event is free, but registration is required. If you wish to attend please email Sian Moseley at MoseleySE@cardiff.ac.uk or telephone on 029 2087 4983. A light buffet, refreshments and wine reception will be provided.
