Paths to Utopia: A Roundtable Session
Starts: 12 June 2013
The Culture, Imagination and Practice Research Group and the Psychosocial Research Group are hosting this symposium
Wednesday 12th June
Symposium: 9am-1.30pm (0.85, Glamorgan Building)
Film Screening of ‘Paths Through Utopia’: 2.30pm (Room TBC)
This ‘Paths to Utopias’ symposium represents a trans-disciplinary endeavour to reject the practical, the possible and the so-called ‘post-ideological’ necessities of realpolitik, instead confronting and problematizing current theoretico-political doxa in order to pose the question of whether there is in fact any escape from the market that we enjoy and suffer today?
This symposium, drawing upon architecture, education, alternative communities and values, anti-ageing science, classical theorisations and critiques of utopia, and contemporary debates pertaining to the work society, ultimately seeks to conceptualise whether there are in fact any lines of flight from, and alternative political imaginaries to, what is belatedly being recognised as the monomaniacal, and wholly unsustainable, modern paradigm of unlimited economic growth, which keeps us imprisoned in the atemporal kingdom of the instantaneous? As long as there is no such utopian project, there will only be one answer: profit will tell us what to do…
Join us in the morning for the symposium, where both contributors and attendees creatively explore, discuss and debate many different strands of utopian thought. This will be followed by an afternoon film screening of ‘Paths Through Utopia.’ Food will be provided in between the two sessions. Both sessions are open to both staff, students and the public.
