| This page refers to chapter
six of the book Qualitative Research and Hypermedia and
presents some exemplary material for the case studies discussed
therein.
"This chapter discusses aspects of fieldwork practice
that present particular challenges for the hypermedia ethnographer.
These challenges are not unfamiliar to ethnographers using
more conventional methods, especially visual methods. But
the multi-media dimension means that fieldwork becomes a
decidedly multi-task activity, for it involves becoming acquainted
with an expanded repertoire of methods for observing and
recording field data. In addition, these data potentially
become more broadly defined. Moreover, the fact that the
entire data set may later be accessed by readers within the
computer screen environment also brings important issues
to the fore. This chapter particularly addresses methods
for the visual recording of insights and observations about
the fieldwork setting, and will address issues of how visual
and other fieldwork methods can be reconciled." (115)
As part of the chapter, we presented two discussions of
case studies that illustrated some of the challenges we faced
and the opportunities we were presented with.
Case Study One: Visual Dilemmas
Defining The Rhondda: an exploration of how
hypermedia affected our definition of the field.
Case Study Two: Three kinds of video data
Illustrations of the three visual strategies we employed
while filming at the research site.
