Sociology is an exciting and challenging social science discipline. It is concerned with the study of society, culture and institutions and is one of the disciplines central to making sense of global and social change. Sociology at Cardiff addresses these topics through a comparative approach and draws upon a wide range of methods - observational, statistical, historical and comparative - to investigate the nature of human life.
Sociology at Cardiff addresses society and globalisation through a comparative approach, drawing on both theoretical perspectives and empirical case studies. In conjunction with generic skills, such as those associated with Information & Communications Technology, Sociology is a highly marketable qualification offering entry to a wide range of occupations and postgraduate courses.
In year one students take introductory modules that are designed to stimulate interest and debate in sociological theories. Students are encouraged to apply these debates in a national and international context and to develop a critical appreciation of the research methods through which sociological explanations are developed.
In years two and three, these issues of theory and method are explored in more detail. Students also have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of modules that reflect the School's diversity and excellence across the range of sociological debates. In particular, the School has high-profile researchers and theorists specialising in education, health and medicine, modernity, environment, risk and time, occupational socialisation, science, technology and methodology. The School places a considerable emphasis on comparative perspectives, so there are plenty of opportunities to study aspects of societies other than Britain.
The School is one of the largest centres of social science research in the UK, with over half of all its research activity rated as either "world leading"or "internationally excellent" in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. The School was ranked by the RAE at the top of UK universities for ‘Research Power’. This is a measure which combines research excellence and research capacity.
