Social Policy (PD7)
The module will consider the high politics and strategic dimensions of social policy, focusing on examples of key developments in the fields of education, social welfare and health. It will include an evaluation of the policy-making process, together with an analysis of dimensions such as the culture of secrecy. Major analytical themes will be further explored in the context of contemporary policy issues and controversies relevant to a range of different professional fields. The module will examine a number of substantive case studies of policy formation in the fields of education, social welfare and health at supra-national, national and devolved levels of policy-making; it will examine the making of particular policies at these different levels of governance and highlighting some of the inherent tensions generated and the significant challenges that remain. Comparative analysis will be afforded by consideration of aspects of social policy in the European context.
