The collection and analysis of quantitative data (PD2)

This module considers quantitative research in relation to your own professional field and also within social science more generally. You will be introduced to a range of methods for locating, generating and analysing quantitative data. You will have the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of the philosophy of statistical testing, its technical aspects and deficiencies. The module will cover the quantitative tradition: aims, objectives and issues; quantitative research design (surveys, experiments and secondary analysis); access and ethics; strategies for sampling and data collection; the analysis of quantitative data: types of data, statistical inference and the use of SPSS; the presentation of quantitative data and ethics in quantitative research.
