Prof Amanda Coffey  


Career Profile

Amanda was appointed as Dean for Education and Students for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in February 2013. Prior to that,  she was the Deputy Director (with responsibility for teaching and learning) in the School of Social Sciences. Amanda was the Director of the Cardiff Node of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) Qualitative Research Methods in the Social Sciences: Innovation, Integration and Impact (QUALITI) (2005-8) and a founding co-director of the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods. Amanda was elected as as Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2011

Amanda joined Cardiff University in 1990, and has been a Professor in the Cardiff School of Social Sciences since 2006.

Memberships / External Activities

Amanda edited Sociology, the journal of the British Sociological Association, from 20009-12 (with Sally Power, Tom Hall and Amanda Robinson). She has also edited Sociological Research On-line (with Nicola Green, 2003-6) and is currently an Executive editor of British Journal of Sociology of Education. Amanda was the founding reviews editor for Qualitative Research and is a  past member of the editorial board of Gender and Education. She currently sits on the editorial boards of Effective Education and Ethnography and Education. Amanda is a member of the peer review college for the ESRC and also regularly reviews for other funding bodies and international publishers.  She has served on the management board of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods and was a member of the Executive group, ESRC Teaching and Learning Research Programme, Research Capacity Building Network. She has also sat on a number of ESRC commissioning panels. Amanda is an experienced external examiner, and has examined PhD s and taught programmes at a number of Universities, both in the UK and internationally. Amanda is a member of the management group of the Wales ESRC Doctoral Training Centre.

Teaching Profile

I have taught across all levels of the School, including undergraduate (introductory and advanced), taught postgraduate and professional doctorate. My main areas of teaching expertise include qualitative research methods, gender relations and society, contemporary sociology of education, sociology of work and gender and education.

I have supervised Masters and PhD theses on a wide range of research topics. Areas of particular interest for PhD supervision include gender relations (inc. the labour market, the professions, social policy, relationships and the family); contemporary education (inc. social justice/gender issues, teachers); young people (inc. education and training, transitions, citizenship issues) and developments in methods and methodology.I am also happy to supervise projects that engage with and/or utilize ethnographic and qualitative approaches (inc. methodological and epistemological issues, as well as empirical studies).

In 2012 I led a successful alliance bid to accredit and deliver the Welsh Government’s Masters in Educational Practice [link to website here). The programme provides opportunities for all newly qualified teachers in Wales to study for a masters award alongside their classroom practice.
