Fixed term contracts

The use of fixed term contracts is to be reviewed by a working party, including Cardiff UCU and other unions in addition to university management.
Cardiff UCU policy is that fixed term contracts should only be used to achieve a specific temporally defined task, like maternity cover. Fixed term contracts should not be used for ongoing roles, even if continued funding is uncertain. A permanent contract should be offered after four years of continuous employment, as required by law.

Comparator regularisation agreements
Hourly-paid teaching staff at Cardiff hope to move onto the common pay spine next year, finally completing implementation of the 2006 pay agreement.
The move will improve benefits to a level that most of us take for granted. Currently, hourly-paid teaching staff:
- are not classified as academics
- their pay varies from school to school
- do not have hours they work outside the classroom fully recognised
- receive less holiday pay
- have no sick leave entitlement
- many have no guarantee of employment from year to year
Cardiff UCU has been discussing these and other issues with the university in a series of negotiating meetings beginning last July. We look forward to a concrete proposal that we can take to members soon.
