About us

We offer a dynamic and engaged teaching and research environment to over 160 academic staff and around 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.

We offer a wide range of degree programmes in the social sciences, and our programme portfolio benefits from academic expertise in a number of disciplines, including sociology, policy studies, criminology, education and social work.

We value our student community and are committed to ensuring that our students enjoy their student experience with us. Students have a say in major changes that affect them through our Staff-Student Panel.

We have a thriving postgraduate research community and offer both PhD and professional doctorate programmes. We also deliver a range of professional programmes including training for social work and teacher development opportunities. Students have the opportunity to work with and learn from world class scholars.

Our research in Education and Sociology was ranked 5th and 3rd respectively in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework assessment. We are home to a number of world-leading research centres, and these engage across a range of research themes.

In 2015 the School achieved Bronze level in the Equality Challenge Unit's gender equality charter mark signifying our commitment to advancing gender equality in higher education.
