BAHAR is a group of researchers on the body, health and religion based in the School's Contemporary Studies Unit. The Group is involved in cross-cultural studies about the body, health, religion and the relationships between them. Our orientation is essentially interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary. BAHAR is linked to a network of scholars of anthropology, religion, theatre, psychology, and other academic disciplines, as well as people working with the body in dance, movement and therapy, and creative artists in a variety of media, in Cardiff and around the world.

The Cardiff Centre for Chaplaincy Studies is jointly sponsored by the University and St. Michael’s College. The Distinctive Mission of the Centre is to study and research the diverse practice of chaplaincy and the issues it raises, in order to better support and deliver chaplains' education and professional development, and to communicate the significance of chaplaincy to an international audience.

The Cardiff Centre for the Crusades was established in 2000 to encourage and develop Cardiff as a focus for research collaboration, conferences and publications in the field of crusading history. It is based in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion and includes leading members from all three departments within the School. The Centre’s interests embrace the history and ideology of the crusading movement, the history and archaeology of the lands conquered by the crusaders, the impact of the crusades on those lands and peoples against which expeditions were directed and from which expeditions were launched, and the history of the Military Orders. All theatres of crusading activity and any crusade from the end of the eleventh century onwards are included.

The Cardiff Centre for Modern German History (CCMGH) provides a focus for research promotion and collaboration. It adopts a broad chronological, thematic and geographical definition of its remit: all aspects of the history of German-speaking central Europe and related issues since 1750.

The Centre for the Study of Medieval Society and Culture aims to promote interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages, bringing together specialists from several different subject areas within the University to collaborate in research and graduate teaching. The Cardiff Centre for Welsh American Studies was established in early 2001 in order to promote the study of the culture, language, literature and history of the Welsh in the United States, Canada and Patagonia. By organising seminars and conferences and encouraging scholarly collaboration, co-operation and discussion, it aims to provide a focal point for an international network of scholars who have an interest in this rapidly growing field of study.

The Families, Identities, and Gender Research Network (FIG) is a interdisciplinary research group founded by academics from the Departments of History, English, Psychology, and Welsh. FIG aims to explore the following areas:
- different disciplinary definitions, concepts, and approaches to the study of family, identity, and gender;
- different subjective (bodily, emotional, and psychological) experiences of family, identity and gender, and their appropriate modes of investigation;
- modes of representation of family, identity, and gender, and their social, political, and historical influence;
- the relation of gender and family to other central organising concepts and aspects of identity such as race, class, and place.
FIG events aim to move beyond the traditional research seminar and encourage participation, discussion, and exchange of ideas to foster a research environment which includes postgraduate and more established scholars.

CISSMI is a research collaboration between Cardiff University, the University of South Wales and the University of Westminster. The research group is dedicated to the study of the history of science (particularly the medical sciences) and the imagination (literary and cultural). Besides the research activities of the group’s members, CISSMI supports a series of seminars, research projects, and public engagement events that allow for discussion and interaction around these key themes.
