European premiere of new translation of oldest Indian comedy

The Master Madam

The European premiere of the Sanskrit comedy The Master Madam, in a new translation by Dr Will Johnson (Centre for the History and Religion of Asia, Cardiff University), is to take place in Cardiff on 29 and 30 March. This comedy in one act, attributed to Bodhayana, is part of CHRA's 2012 programme of events.

The production is a collaboration between members of different Cardiff communities  - academics, professional theatre practitioners, and local people – to bring this funny, accessible work to a wider audience. It will be performed in Splott, an area where the work of several of the School’s Research Centres is focused.

The new script-in-hand performance will feature a cast of professional actors and creatives, including Ellora Adam, Boyd Clack, David Evans, Kirsten Jones, Gareth Pierce, Sule Rimi, Bobby Singh, Ruth Stringer, Jams Thomas, Sarah Louise Tyler, and the participation of members of the East Moors Community Centre Youth Club.
The audience is invited to stay for an after-show talk, focusing on the Indian content of the play and exploring the challenges of bringing a new translation to life in the 21st century.

This production is organised by 'Wing & Prayer', in conjunction with the National Theatre Wales Team,  CHRA, and Cardiff Youth Services.

Tickets for the performances on 29 and 30 March at 7pm are free but advance booking is required.  To book, go online to
