Undergraduate Study
As an undergraduate BA student in the Department:
- You will be part of a friendly and encouraging department
- You will be engaged with a stimulating and ever-newsworthy subject
- You will be mixing with a lively body of students from a variety of backgrounds, who will become your friends
- You will be taught by enthusiastic staff who may be historians, sociologists, theologians, anthropologists, linguists, philosophers …
- You will be either a Single Honours (single subject) or a Joint Honours (two subjects)
- You will find that Cardiff’s pattern for first year study, and the wide range of module choices in tears two and three, offers both flexibility and the opportunity to specialise.
Your learning will be organised into course modules and our student support programme will ensure that you get guidance on the various pathways available. Each year you will also be provided with a comprehensive handbook to help you make informed decisions about your module choices. This handbook contains book lists, synopses of course content, details of assessment, etc. In addition, each module has its own "course book" which explains what you can expect to learn and what is required of you in terms of submitting course work.
Student Support & Personal Tutors
Supporting you as a student is important to us. You will be assigned a Personal Tutor (for further information on our Personal Tutor system and other support services see here) who is able to advise on academic, non-academic and personal matters in a confidential and informal manner. Students may have problems from time to time and the personal tutor system is designed to overcome these as effectively and quickly as possible. The Department also has a Student Support Officer who has a special remit for care of first year students and also provides advice through all three years, should any difficulties arise.
