Enrolment for Year 1 BA Ancient History

Welcome to Ancient History! These notes are intended as a general guide to the enrolment process for students taking BA Ancient History and joint degrees involving Ancient History. You will receive more detailed advice from your tutors when you come to Cardiff, but if you have problems understanding the instructions on this page, please contact the Ancient History Administrator, Mrs Susan Edwards, either by emailing EdwardsSD@cf.ac.uk, by phoning (029) 2087 4821, or by calling into the School Office (room 4.54 in the Humanities Building).

Enrolment programme

| 2.00– | Joint honours students only: Visit your Personal Tutor in your associate subject. | |
| Wednesday 26 September | 9.00–12.00 | Enrol for your additional subjects, in the Humanities Building. Bring some passport photos of yourself, and a printout of the Humanities Year 1 Enrolment Proforma. Details of which room to visit for each subject will be posted in the lobby of the Humanities Building. |
| 1.00–3.30 | Enrol for Ancient History modules (Humanities Building, room 3.47). | |
| Thursday 27 September | 2.00–4.00 | Return to your Personal Tutor's office to select your modules in the online enrolment system and have them approved. |
| Friday 28 September | Introductory subject talks. The Ancient History talk is at 11 am in lecture theatre 2.01; there is an alternative talk for students taking Religious Studies only, at 3 pm in room 4.09. Structure of BA Ancient History Year 1
You must take modules to the value of 120 credits. Each Year 1 subject consists of 40 credits of modules, so most students study three subjects in their first year, their degree subject and two others (e.g. Archaeology, English, Philosophy). Your three subjects are made up as follows:
Ancient History: 40 credits, consisting of two modules:
- HS3101: Introduction to Ancient Greek History (20 credits), which explores the main developments in Greek history and civilisation from the eighth to the first century BC.
- HS3102: Introduction to Roman History (20 credits), which provides a grounding in Roman history and society from the rise of the city to the Later Roman Empire.
Second subject: 40 credits, from any department in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The subjects available are listed in the Humanities and Social Studies Year 1 Enrolment and Subject Guide. Note that you will have to check for timetable clashes, that some subjects have specific entrance requirements, and that some have restricted numbers of places.
Third subject: 40 credits, chosen from the same list of subjects.
Ancient History is in Timetable Group D. You will not be able to take any other subject in the same group, as the classes will clash with Ancient History classes.
Joint Honours with Ancient History
If you are taking a Joint Honours degree, you will normally take:
Ancient History: 40 credits, consisting of the two modules listed above (HS3101 and HS3012).
Your other degree subject: 40 credits.
One additional subject: 40 credits, chosen from the list of subjects in the Humanities and Social Studies Year 1 Enrolment and Subject Guide. Note that you will have to check for timetable clashes, that some subjects have specific entrance requirements, and that some have restricted numbers of places.
If you are taking Ancient History with History, French, German, Italian or Spanish, Ancient History is your Home Department. Please follow the instructions on this page. You should enrol for the modules in your other degree subject on Wednesday afternoon, before enrolling for the Ancient History modules.
If you are taking any other joint degree, Ancient History is not your Home Department. Please follow the instructions supplied by your home department. You should come to enrol for your Ancient History modules on Wednesday afternoon, before enrolling for your other degree subject.
You will have a Personal Tutor in both of your degree subjects, but on Tuesday morning you should go to the tutor in your home department. You should visit your other tutor on Tuesday afternoon.
