Undergraduate Degrees in Ancient History

Ancient History degrees at Cardiff explore the history, society and culture of the Greek and Roman world from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine Empire. The first-year modules provide a broad introduction to Greek and Roman history, and to some of the most important sources and methods used by ancient historians. In the second and third years, you can choose from a wide range of options in political, military and social history, and in the art and archaeology of the ancient world. Ancient texts are studied in translation, but you can learn to read the originals through our courses in Greek and Latin, which are available at all levels from beginners' to advanced.

If you wish, you can extend the chronological scope of your degree by taking an integrated degree in Ancient and Medieval History. Alternatively, you can complement your historical study of the ancient world with training in archaeological techniques and methods, by taking an integrated degree in Archaeology and Ancient History. We also offer a variety of joint degrees with other subjects in the humanities and social sciences.

We offer the following undergraduate degree programmes:

You do not need to have studied Ancient History at school to do one of our degrees; most of our students have not studied the subject before. Teaching in Ancient History is delivered through lectures, small-group seminars and individual tutorials. Assessment is by a combination of coursework, class tests, oral presentations and exams.
