Historiographical Study II: Key debates - 10 credits (HST699)

The key to fully understanding any historical field and the essential precursor to embarking upon new research in that area, is to have a full engagement with, and understanding of the historiography. The influences of theory, of politics, of race, class, gender, time, interact to produce a variety of perspectives and interpretations. The role played by individual historians, and the influence of particular schools of thought are important in understanding the development of historiographical approaches and positions as are the discovery and use of new primary source materials and changes in the ways in which these are interpreted. This course considers the historiography of a specialised research field and of major debates within the field.
