Key Research Skills - 10 credits (HST643)

The module is designed to provide students with transferable skills for researching, writing and career development. The skills addressed are also of key importance for researching and writing history and for thinking about a career that involves academic research in the social sciences or the humanities, The module covers how to plan a project and formulate research questions, how to undertake a literature search (including awareness of information technology, electronic databases, etc), how to reference research and to produce a bibliography with a high degree of professionalism. Research dissemination, including media awareness, clarity of exposition, preparing and delivering research papers and work for publication are covered. In addition, the module introduces students to basic data handling and statistical skills, ICT packages and methods of organising, interpreting and presenting data. The module also raises ethical, legal and copyright issues about the use of archival and non-documentary sources. Throughout the module, students undertake a number of small exercises to hone and to test the skills that they have acquired.
