The Early Celts - 40 credits (HST533)
The module focuses on the Iron Age of central and Western Europe. It begins with an examination of what is meant by 'Celtic' - a term that has caused numerous recent controversies. Next an analysis of the archaeological evidence follows two strands: one dealing with the evidence from Continental Europe; the second dealing with evidence from Britain and Ireland. Major themes covered include settlement (early hill forts and oppida), burial (princely graves, inhumation cemeteries and the appearance of cremations) and contact between the region and the Classical world, and within Europe.
