Post-Roman Britain and Ireland - 40 credits (HST531)
This module introduces students to aspects of the archaeology and history of Britain and Ireland between c. AD 400 and 800. It looks briefly at late Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon settlement before concentrating on the 'Celtic' areas of the British Isles. Attention focuses on the archaeological record (artefacts, settlement and burials) and to a lesser extent the literary sources (Gildas, Historia Brittonum, Annals Cambriae, Annals of Ulster). In addition, the module examines the archaeology of Christianity and developments of Insular Art (from the so-called Ultimate La Tene through the Hiberno-Saxon climax to the Viking Age).
