Themes in the Neolithic - 20 credits (HST405)

This module aims to develop students' understanding and knowledge of the main themes, debates and problems in the study of the European Neolithic. Students address recurrent problems of interpretation, situate debates and contributions in terms of regional research agendas, and formulate appropriate approaches to the discussion of core research problems. The module is delivered in the autumn semester through small group discussion. Assessment is by an extended essay (c. 4000 words). Major topics studied: transitions (and their contexts), sedentary and mobile settlement, the living and dying house, kinds of production, collective and single deaths, building the world (monuments), individuals, the gender of the gift.
