Understanding Late Antique and Byzantine Sources - 20 credits (RTT308)
The amount and variety of late antique and Byzantine sources and the tools and techniques of interpreting them can be baffling, especially to someone in the early stages of postgraduate study. What actually constitutes a source? How can we understand and present non-textual sources? What do we have to consider when handling textual sources? What types of textual sources are there, how can we access them (including in translation), and how do we present them in our work? This introductory module will give students the necessary grounding in the relevant skills and techniques and enable them to handle texts and other sources competently and with increasing confidence.
