Approaches to Ancient Art - 20 credits (HST205)

Visual material is a rich source of evidence for the ancient world. In this module students are introduced to key concepts and themes in the study of ancient art, develop the critical vocabulary to describe and analyse works of art, and debate prominent issues in modern research. Topics to be studied include style, naturalistic and schematic art, narrative, attribution, copying and genre, context, iconography and portraiture. The classes will consider both Greek and Roman art, ranging from Archaic Greece to Late Antiquity.
