Greek Epigraphy - 20 credits (HST026)
Inscriptions are one of the most important sources for the historian and archaeologist of ancient Greece. This course will provide an introduction to epigraphy for postgraduates, with an emphasis on Attica, the most epigraphically productive region of Greece. It will include: (a) an introduction to Greek, specifically Attic, epigraphy (including bibliographical guidance); (b) hands-on sessions (including use of squeezes) designed to familiarise students with the editorial process; and (c) study of specific texts. The overall aim is to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to make use of inscriptions in historical and archaeological research. Some prior knowledge of ancient Greek is essential. Assessment is by an essay of 4,000 words.
