Working title: The Old French Translation of William of Tyre
My PhD research is focused upon the Old French translation (L’Estoir d’Eracles) of William of Tyre’s work, commonly called Historia Rerum in Partibus Transmarinis Gestarum (History of Deeds Done Beyond the Sea). I am analysing the differences between the French and Latin text and hope to be able to determine a date and a location for the translation. I also aim to determine the material added and removed by the translator and to investigate whether or not the translation was a part of a wider social interest in the Crusades. This research is a part of The Old French William of Tyre and Its Continuations project under Professor Peter Edbury and funded by the AHRC.
