Working Title: Roman Forts in their Landscapes
The project will investigate the location of the known Roman military structures in Wales and Scotland. The distribution, siting, orientation and views from the structures will be analysed in order to identify potential patterns and to suggest or identify possible strategies used by the Roman army. A number of questions will be addressed including:
Are there any patterns in the siting and distribution of military structures? Did the army favour particular settings for forts? Did the army favour particular views from the forts? Can any themes be identified, such as preferences for views of communication links, routes of access to the fort, routes of access to other Roman sites, native settlements or other military sites? Can the siting of the military structures be used to consider Roman strategies in Scotland and Wales? Is it possible to identify ways in which the Roman army used the landscape to its advantage? Are there any changes over time or differences between Scotland and Wales?
The study of Roman forts from a landscape perspective is relatively uncommon, especially when compared to studies that focus on the landscape context of prehistoric sites. This study will therefore provide an opportunity to evaluate the approach and discuss any successes, limitations and potential future developments of similar methods.
