Reconstructing the Feasts of Late Neolithic Britain

I am currently employed as a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow to undertake research on feasting and mobility in Late Neolithic Britain. The three year project (2013-5) aims to reconstruct the networks that the great monument complexes of Britain supported and to identify the frequency, scale and nature of activity at these centres. The research focuses on faunal remains from a range of complexes and integrates my newly developed (taphonomic analysis) and validated (pig strontium) methods with novel uses of other techniques (pig cementum banding).The project builds on research undertaken as part of the Feeding Stonehenge project (PI Mike Parker Pearson).

Dama International

Multi-disciplinary research project investigating the biogeography and management of the European Fallow Deer over the last 6,000 year. I was responsible for isotope, zooarchaeological and biometric components of the project and am now on the steering committee. Funded by the AHRC (PI Naomi Sykes).


I am a zooarchaeologist on the major international research project at the multi-period site of Butrint, Albania.


I am part of the faunal team for the major international excavations at Çatalhöyük, Turkey.


I am the project zooarchaeologist for the Archaic/Hellenistic settlement at Praisos, Crete

Ecology of Crusading

I am part of the faunal team on the ERC-funded Ecology of Crusading project, most recently having undertaken analysis in Latvia.

Sourcing Swine: Strontium Isotopes Diagenesis in Pigs

Project to tests the validity of the application of strontium isotope analysis for sourcing pigs. Perceived analytical barriers relating to greater porosity reported in porcine enamel have limited the application of the approach for pigs. This experimental project involved submerging archaeological and modern pig enamel samples in a chalk substrate for 10 months, whilst assessing diagenetic uptake at 2 month intervals. In addition samples from sites where the presence of non-local pigs was considered likely were tested. Research demonstrated the validity of the approach by identifying non-local pigs but also demonstrated that some diagenetic uptake of strontium occurred. Funded by the NERC Isotope Geosciences Laboratory.

Creating refined chronologies for the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age transition in southern Britain

Project which employs a Bayesian approach to improve Bronze Age/Iron Age transitional chronology. Funded by ORADS.

Foddering for the Feasts

Isotope research project (δ13C, δ15N) to investigate diversity in foddering regimes for pigs in Later Prehistoric British middens. Funded by the Prehistoric Society and the Cambrian Archaeological Association. 

The Whitchurch Project
