My research interests encompass aspects of Roman Republican history, 218–31 BC (politics and public life, especially elections; prosopography; numismatics; Roman Republican historiography; Cato the Elder; Cicero; Sallust; Roman military history, especially the Cimbric Wars), and the early Principate, 31 BC–AD 117 (Augustus; Roman imperial historiography; Livy; Tacitus; Appian; Roman technology; wood supplies; communications; civil and military logistics).
I am also interested in Greek and Hellenistic history: Sicily, especially Syracuse; topography and geography; Greek historiography; Herodotos: Thukydides; Diodorus Siculus; military history; the Athenian siege of Syracuse; Carthaginian activities in Sicily; Syracusan imperialism under Dionysios I and Agathokles.
