About the Contemporary Studies Unit

The Contemporary Studies Unit (CSU) consists of a number of related activities within the Cardiff School of History, Archaeology and Religion that have in common their direct engagement with the contemporary world and the recent past. The Unit includes work in contemporary religion, social anthropology, Asian studies, chaplaincy studies, the sociology of religion and economic history. The Unit includes academic staff, research fellows and PhD students. While it is primarily a research unit, staff in or associated with the Unit are also involved in undergraduate and postgraduate coursework teaching, and details of their teaching can be found below.

At present the Unit consists of three research groups that are full members of the CSU, and two others that are associate members. The full members of the Unit are the Cardiff Centre for Chaplaincy Studies (CCCS), the Body Health and Religion Research Group (BAHAR) and the Autism Spectrum People and Religion Research Group (ASPARRG). The Keynes Seminar Group and Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK (ISLAM-UK) are associate members of the CSU. Staff in these groups are formally located elsewhere within SHARE but are associated with the CSU because of their contemporary focus.
