introducing the University
"One of the top teaching and research institutions in the UK. Cardiff is everything a good university should be- it has excellent facilities, often magnificent buildings, great social and sporting facilities, wrapped up in a vibrant, cultural city centre."
The Sunday Times Good University Guide
Insights into distant galaxies, medical breakthroughs, a major translation of The Mabinogion or amazing archaeological discoveries, welcome to an academic community that is internationally recognised.
Founded in 1883, by Royal Charter, with thirteen members of academic staff and 151 students, Cardiff University today has grown to become one of the UK's largest, most respected and most popular universities. Cardiff is a member of the UK's "Ivy League" of Russell Group research intensive universities. In 2010 we recorded our best-ever year for winning new research grants - at just under £150 million.
The University's success is founded on the talent and dedication of our staff and students. Staff have high levels of overall satisfaction with their work, according to a comprehensive staff survey. This is supported by many University initiatives to improve the working experience. The student experience is also a high priority. Our students are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, with students attracted from throughout Wales, the rest of the UK and world-wide. Many of the University's degree schemes provide partial or complete exemption from relevant professional examinations with more than 50 schemes of study benefitting from accreditation and input from professional bodies. More than twenty per cent of Cardiff University students pursue postgraduate study.
Having gained national and international standing, Cardiff University's vision is to be a world-leading university and to achieve the associated benefits for its students, staff and all other stakeholders. Our research reputation is one of the principal factors in staff and student recruitment and this is likely to be an increasingly important consideration as the global market in higher education becomes even more competitive.
In attracting, developing and retaining staff capable of working at a level which is internationally competitive, and in growing our postgraduate research student community, we will be securing sustainable foundations for research.
