Security & Portering Services
Operation
Security & Portering Services are directed by the Head of Security & Portering Services, Tony Oliver, assisted by the Deputy Head of Security & Portering Services, Tony Lewis, and 9 support/clerical staff. Operations are divided between Security Services & Portering Services.
Security Services consists of 4 Security Shifts, each with a Supervisor and a team of 14 Campus Patrol Officers, who operate on a continuous shift pattern to provide cover for the University and Halls of Residences. The Officers are deployed at strategic locations throughout the campus. Patrol Officer duties are coordinated through the Control Room, which operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Portering Services consists of Porters, including Mail & Manual Handling teams and full details on these operations are available on separate pages. Click on the link to view the page: Portering Services.
Control Room
The Control Room operates 24 hours a day, every day, and is located in the Security Centre, here CCTV cameras are monitored and the images are recorded. The records are maintained in accordance with Home Office guidelines, and the images are recorded onto a mixture of real time and time lapse digital video recorders. Stills pictures can be acquired from the video image if required. Video Records can be used as evidence of crimes committed against University Staff, Students, or property. Control Room staff also operate the University's internal emergency telephones after office hours, operate city wide two-way radio systems and monitor Fire & Intruder alarms, maintaining a high level of service through the day and night.
Closed Circuit Cameras
A comprehensive CCTV Camera system operates throughout the University campus, including the large residential sites. The cameras, in conjunction with two-way radios, are used to great effect, directing security staff to incidents, observing, following and apprehending intruders, or suspected criminals. Close co-operation with South Wales Police Cardiff Control Centre, extends the cover of the city centre CCTV system. This initiative speeds up the liaison, between the University Security Staff and South Wales Police, helping to cement our excellent relationship with the local Constabulary.
Site Security Officers
Our two Assistant Security Managers, Eric Thompson and Tony Grimes, are experts on a whole range of security issues and investigate security incidents of any size at the earliest opportunity. They can provide a free security assessment of student accommodation in the private sector, on request (subject to resource constraints). Their expertise is also used to plan future events and deal with lost property matters.
