Transitions and adaptations in selected city-rural regions
Bringing together a powerful research team, this programme will produce models to show how cities and rural regions develop.
Using specific examples from the UK, Europe and China, and working with world-leading collaborators, it will take theoretical and model-building work to new levels.
It will use growth models to explore, simulate and visualise alternative routes to sustainable development, specifically including:
New offices built in the UK using sustainable materials
- A hybrid urban growth model in the South Wales / South West England city-region, examining implications of potential developments such as the Severn Barrage;
- A land economy model, which can predict land value and use;
- An urban-rural food systems model, exploring food supply chains and food procurement processes.
The programme, while taking such work to new levels, will also draw on research already undertaken by Cardiff experts, in collaboration with other global leaders in the field.
The findings will inform policy-makers and enable the creation of more sustainable neighbourhoods in the future.
The programme brings together researchers from the schools of City and Regional Planning, Architecture, and Engineering, and will significantly develop and extend social sciences work on food systems and sustainable communities by colleagues in BRASS.
