The following are the key members of the Research Institute’s new team.
Professor Terry Marsden
Director of the Institute, Professor of Environmental Policy and Planning, and Co-Director of the BRASS Research Centre. He is a specialist in international rural development, sustainability and the rural environment.
Professor Susan Baker
Professor of Environmental Social Science, Professor Baker has expertise on the interrelationship between social and ecological processes, particularly in relation to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Professor Mike Bruford
A molecular ecologist in the School of Biosciences, he studies the demographic and evolutionary processes in small and fragmented populations. He focuses on the determinants of diversity and structure in endangered species.
Professor Ian Hall
Deputy Head of the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences and Director of Postgraduate Research, Professor Ian Hall has research expertise in ocean circulation variability and its interaction with global climate.
Professor Phil Jones
Phil Jones is chair of Architectural Science and Head of the Welsh School of Architecture. His teaching and research activities encompass the fields of energy use, environmental design and sustainability in the built environment.
Professor Robert Lee
Professor of Law at Cardiff Law School and Co-Director the BRASS research centre. His work relates to why and how economic activity is regulated and how responsibility for regulation falls within the public and private sectors.
Professor Stephen Palmer
Stephen Palmer is Director of Health Protection Agency in the Department of Primary Health Care and Public Health in the School of Medicine.
Professor Ken Peattie
Ken Peattie is the Director of BRASS, the Centre for Business, Relationships, Accountability and Society, and also a Professor of Marketing and Strategy at Cardiff Business School.
Professor Nick Pidgeon
Professor of Environmental Psychology. He conducts research on environmental and emerging technology risks, energy technologies, and public perceptions of climate change.
Professor Yacine Rezgui
A Building Research Establishment Chair in Sustainable Engineering, his research involves re-thinking construction and enhancing buildings to have lifelong resiliency and adaptability to their environment, usage and occupancy.
Professor Hywel Thomas
Director of the School of Engineering, and Director of the Geoenvironmental Research Centre, his research interests are in sustainable urban environment, urban pollutants and the development of a sustainable geoenvironment.
Institute Expertise
Bringing together a range of scientific fields for the first time, the Sustainable Places Research Institute draws on the expertise of ten of the University’s academic Schools as well as researchers from a number of research centres.
Led by the Institute Director, the Research Institute will develop under the management of a team of ten leading academics, and will be supported by approximately 50 research affiliates from across the academic Schools and associated research centres, creating a Wales-based hub for current and future world-leading researchers to develop sustainability science.
