International competition draws interest in Sustainable Places Research Institute.
An international competition, which is underway in Egypt to find innovative solutions to redesign Cairo’s city centre, has created two new collaborations with the Sustainable Places University Research Institute.
Egypt’s Ministry of Culture has recently embarked on a number of projects aimed at restoring the historic urban value of Cairo central business district including its historic sites. One of the initial phases includes tendering an international competition for the ‘Urban Design and Harmony and the Historic Conservation of Opera and Ataba Squares’.
Members of the Sustainable Places Research Institute are this week welcoming a delegation from the British University in Egypt and Space Consultants, a Cairo-based leading architectural practice, to discuss collaborative research on the City of Cairo which will feed into the British University’s tender to redesign Cairo into a sustainable city for the future.
In addition, the Institute has been approached to support the British University in setting up its own sustainability research centre, linked with Sustainable Places.
The Sustainable Places Research Institute will be providing support and guidance to Cairo-based Space Consultants as part of its own competition tender. Led by Professor Yacine Rezgui, Professor of Engineering Informatics and a key member of the Research Institute, the Institute’s role will be to provide assistance and advice in line with the its own work in finding and implementing practical, locally-based sustainable solutions for individual cities, regions and nations.
Professor Rezgui, said: “The aims of the competition and Cairo’s vision of what a sustainable city will look like fit well with our own visions at the Institute. We are excited to be welcoming colleagues from Cairo to Cardiff to share our research and expertise in this area.”
Professor Rezgui has also been invited to give a key note address at the First International Conference on Sustainability and the Future, organised by the British University in Cairo between 23-25 November 2010. The conference will bring together researchers and professionals from all over the globe to share and exchange knowledge and experiences on sustainable developments in both the developing as well as developed countries.
