Collaborations
The Sustainable Places Research Institute will link expertise in sustainability, ecology, economics and society from across the University.
The Research Institute is a joint collaboration between Cardiff School of Planning and Geography, School of Medicine, School of Psychology, School of Social Sciences, School of Biosciences, Cardiff Law School, Cardiff Business School, School of Engineering, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, and Welsh School of Architecture.
The Research Institute will also work alongside researchers at the Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability & Society (BRASS) who focus on business sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and particularly on the relationships between businesses and their key stakeholders (customers, suppliers, investors, workers, local communities and regulators)
- Cardiff University Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (CUIMRC) - CUIMRC has identified three principal research themes within the centre - Sustainable Change; Sustainable Logistics; and Sustainable Technology.
- Centre for Integrated Renewable Energy Generation and Supply (CIREGS) - A £3.8m award from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales has supported the establishment of this centre to develop research into energy generation and supply.
- Centre for Research in the Built Environment (CRiBE) - Recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the Welsh Assembly Government, the Centre’s primary aim is the effective and sustainable design, construction and operation of the built environment.
- Centre for Research on Environment, Society and Space (CRES) - CRES is a major research centre based in the Cardiff School of Planning and Geography. It was established in 2004 to develop a growing volume of rural and environmental research within the University.
- Climate Change Consortium of Wales (C3W) - C3W aims to improve our fundamental understanding of the causes, nature, timing and consequences of clim]ate change on physical and societal systems. The Consortium, which includes academics from Cardiff University, is a £4m, six-year programme of research and outreach, supported by the Reconfiguration and Collaboration Fund of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW).
- The Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) - BRASS is an ESRC funded interdisciplinary research centre combining expertise from the Business School, the Law School and the Cardiff School of Planning and Geography (CPLAN). Research at the centre focuses on business sustainability and corporate social responsibility, and particularly on the relationships between businesses and their key stakeholders (customers, suppliers, investors, workers, local communities and regulators).
- Geoenvironmental Research Centre - Based in the School of Engineering, the Geoenvironmental Research Centre carries out research on a broad front of problems, with its interest ranging from fundamental studies of soil behaviour, through project based applications to commercial exploitation and development.
- Hydro-Environmental Research Centre - The Centre has an international reputation in environmental water management, with collaborative studies being undertaken with institutions in 14 countries, as well as other UK universities.
- Institute of Environment and Sustainability - The Institute of Environment and Sustainability is a multidisciplinary research group comprising: the Geoenvironmental Research Centre and the Hydro-environmental Research Centre.
- Low Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) - Led by the School of Architecture, the LCRI develops capacity and facilities around the existing areas of low carbon and energy expertise in Wales whilst being international in its outlook, developing a strategic long term programme of research.
- Organisms and Environment Research Division - Based in the School of Biosciences, the Organisms and Environment research division focuses on the biology of whole organisms and their roles and interactions in changing ecosystems, in infection and health and at the genetic level.
- Regeneration Institute - The Institute acts as a vehicle for research in area-based regeneration, embracing academic and policy-related research at local, regional and international levels.
- Understanding Risk Research Group - The Understanding Risk research group in the School of Biosciences is made up of a network of researchers who study risk in an interdisciplinary manner and have a particular focus on examining risk within real life, applied situations.
