The Research Institute's research is principally undertaken through six interdisciplinary themes:

Adaptations around mobilities, flows and migration

This research agenda aims to understand the implications of the dynamic flows that occur within and between places and ecosystems.

Adaptive governance for social and ecological transitions

Governance of sustainable places goes well beyond promoting environmentally responsible behaviour to more reflexive practices.

BRASS Research Unit

The University hosted the ESRC Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society (BRASS) from 2001-2012.

Health and connected communities

This programme aims to develop international excellence in cross-disciplinary research into the relationship between health, wellbeing and places.

Resilience in coupled natural-social systems

Place-based, this theme investigates the sustainable management of natural landscapes.

Security, risk and resilient places

Humanity faces massive environmental challenges in the 21st century, including climate change, population growth and scarcity of resources.

Transitions and adaptations in selected city-rural regions

This work programme engages with current debates and theorising on city-region transition and adaptation.
