Dr Abid Mehmood is a Research Fellow at Sustainable Places Research Institute. He is currently engaged in research on environment, sustainability and climate change governance from the perspectives of urban, rural and international development. He is particularly interested in the role of social innovation in human development.
Dr Mehmood has a multidisciplinary background (geology, business administration, economics, spatial planning). His research has been primarily of a collaborative and interdisciplinary nature, involving project partnerships in Asia, Australia, North and South Americas, and Europe.
At the Institute he is engaged in interdisciplinary work to develop new approaches to more innovative and sustainable governance by looking at the social, economic and environmental processes and influences. One key aspect is the role of informal practices and entrepreneurial initiatives from social actors and innovators.
Dr Mehmood is an External Assessor for the European Commission, The Research Council of Norway, and Czech Ministry of Education Youth and Sports. He is member of UN-Habitat Universities Network, European Spatial Development Planning network, and associate member of Higher Education Academy UK. He has been a visiting scholar in Harokopio University of Athens, University of Milan-Bicocca, University of Naples Federico II, KTH Stockholm, Newcastle University, KU Leuven and Middle East Technical University Ankara.
Dr Mehmood has a BSc in Geology from Karachi University, MBA in Management Information Systems from Hamdard University, Research Masters (DEA) in Regional Development Planning from University of Lille, and a Doctorate in Spatial Planning from Newcastle University UK.
